AUTO EXPO INDIA 2008 FLASHBACK

LOOKING BACK ON AUTO EXPO 2008

The Auto Expo was held in January 2008 in New Delhi. The Expo is held at Pragati Maidan the largest exhibition centre in India where most of the important exhibitions are held in India, including the India International Exhibition and the International Book Fair. In this post we have given a few of the important models that were lined up for launch at the time, and are now running on the roads in India and abroad.

FIAT LINEA - The most important launch for Fiat in India after after their one-brand offering the Palio which has outrun its tenure. Though it was launched in 2007 in Turkey it has been a runaway success internationally, with its smooth flowing lines and perfect shape designed by Italian designers who are famous for their elegant designs on their Ferraris and Lamborginis. The dual parabola lights and unique grill give it an assertive look, to many Indians the grill brings back nostalgic memories of the Fiat workhorse that Indian families owned for decades before other cars were brought into India. It offers a diesel 1.3 litre engine with 86 PS at 4000 RPM, 203 Nm at 2500 RPM, and a petrol engine with 90 PS at 6000 RPM, 115 Nm at 4500 RPM . It has a first-time Blue and Me handsfree technology with which one can take calls with ease. After launch in India in January 2009 it has been a huge success for Fiat which followed the launch with Garnde Punto.

After the success of Linea, Fiat launched the Grande Punto in June 2009. In the diesel version it has launched the universally popular Multijet engine which runs the diesel Swift and Tata Vista. In the diesel version it offers a 1.3 ltre engine while there are 2 versions in Petrol 1.2 and 1.4 spread across 3 trims in 1.2 petrol and diesel - Active, Dynamic and Emotion.

Fiat also intends to bring in Bravo soon, pictures above - a premium hatchback from their European stables.

The Fiat 500 is another luxury hatchback pronounced cinquecento, a two-door model launched in July 2008 at a whopping price of Rs 14.85 ex-showroom Delhi. For anyone who buys it, there is a guarantee of all heads turning wherever the car goes.

Undoubtedly, the most-awaited car launch of the world, the Tata Nano for which thousands thronged the pavilion on all days just to get a glimpse of the car. Tata promised a safe car for a family of four at a price of Rs 1 lakh, and even after escalations, kept to the promise for the first 100000 owners. In Ratan Tata's words "a promise is a promise".

Though Nano stole the thunder, the Tatas also displayed the Indica Vista which takes over from the Indica, though the Indica will also be sold alongside. The Indica Vista has the Multijet engine that also powers the Swift and Grande Punto. The dashboard is placed centrally in the car, starting a new trend(Chevrolet Spark also had it earlier) and freeing up space in front of the driver.

Shown above is the Tata Sumo Grande which also launched and was supposed to take on the Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Innova. However, time has told its tale, with Scorpio mHawk and the new Innova ripping away the sales charts leaving the Sumo Grande far behind....

The Skoda Roomster a 5-door MPV on display.

BMW 530i which has been the most popular car from BMW in the Luxury Business segment worldwide.
